Book is the Food for the brain and is source for helping to be ready for their life!!!
We acknowledge that reading is very important for the study and the development of every child in the world. But in Cambodia children don’t read the books base on different reasons such as there is a very limited of books, lack of librarians, no library, lack of books classification, lack of motivation, children don't know about the value of reading and especially the culture of dislike on reading.
So, the first step for PKO is to make the children feel habit to reading and start to fall in love with reading as well as the books. We believe if the children fall in love with the books no matters where the books are, they will try to find for reading. To change the concept and the culture of children or people is not easy and need time to do. PKO experiences at working with children since 1997 and we have learned that Play is the best method to attract children and motivate the children for any purposes. Play is a very important tool or activity to help children to growth through the child development steps. Play is very important and children like very much at play. When children are playing they sometime forget that it is time for them to eat, so, we have to be well organized, well prepared, good to choose the suitable kinds of plays and games, and well facilitate them. Thus, PKO uses play activities as the method to bring up the children together and installing with useful books for them to read with our experienced and well trained librarians.
To improve the reading habit of children in Battambang, now PKO has established the Mobile Non-formal Education library Project and is implementing it. This project is implementing through using four motors Tuk Tuk as the mean of the transportation of the books, games and other educational materials from one location to another location. Each motor Tuk Tuk is covering for 5 locations and there are 20 locations that PKO is implementing this project.
